Pontiac Repair: 95 grand am, crank sensor, obd ii

Question
QUESTION: Todd-Follow up question-still having problems with my Quad 4-Runs good for days then out of nowhere motor missing and stalling. I found out water was not getting in car on passenger side so the computer was dry (I fixed water leak). I sprayed water around ignition area & had no problems with missing. I changed ignition module with a used one and ohmed out  coil pack for spark plugs. 1 & 4 ohm out and 2 & 3 Is this correct? The plastic around the coil pack looks good. I've put a fuel filter, ignition switch, oxygen sensor, temp. sensor and crank sensor. When I removed old crank sensor about a 1/4 of it fell into the oil pan. Could this be the problem? This small magnetic pc moving around in the oil pan and getting on the crank be affecting the signal to the new sensor? It makes sense but I just can't believe that's possible but car runs good for days then acts up. When the car cuts off I can still hear the fuel pump running but could it still be a problem within the fuel system or the pump?  When car cuts off it starts right back up most of the time.  Thanks for any help

ANSWER: On days that it will run  bad is it on a damp day? If so I still satnd by the issue is a coil housing being the issue or the spark plug boots being the issue. If not then you have to start looking else where. Has any dtc's set in this car? have you had it scanned for codes. if any codes set that is where you should start. This is a PRE OBD II engine it has OBD II components but not OBD II compliant. OBD II engines systems are more user frienldy for technicians to find the root cause of a problem do to the nature of the codes stoed and they history the code stores in the computer. That said if this set a code it is more likely to lead you in the right direction this engine has a cam and crank sensor so it has the ability to store more complex codes for the ignition system.. It's har to say about the sensor breaking off cauing an issue I would think it would be an issue all the time more so then an intermittant. You had this issue before that happend anyways right? did you use factory parts or after market parts? good luck :)

QUESTION: Running bad dry or damp. No codes stored-check engine light usually comes on then goes out. The garage I took it to did'nt have code reader for that year. Is there a way to check coils? I just don't see anything wrong with them. Most of parts replaced were aftermarket except oxygen sensor.  I am taking car to a garage next week it's stressing me out!! Thanks for quick reply.

Answer
If the service engine light has come on while it's running there will be code(s) stored. if not I would suspect a engine computer or a bad power or ground feed to the engine computer. These cars were noted for bad ground connections at the transmission to engine mounting bolts at the front of the engine and there is a ground stud on the side of the block near the oil filter. As far as the coils you can only check the resistance the primart side should be less then say 2 ohms and the secondary side sould be arouk 6,000 ohms. Just because they are reading okay doen't mean when they get hot they are not breaking down.
