Pontiac Repair: 1997 pontiasc trans sport trans problem, blown fuse, electrical failure

Question
QUESTION: 1997 trans sport code 0740,0753 and 0758 come up when i scanned after changing tranny twice. all three trans had same symptoms. 2and 3 gear only. no OD and no Cruise. first trans was original and had 168000 miles. i replaced it and this one worked for a week and then developed same symptoms. i pulled that one and replaced with a third which had immediately showed the same symptoms. could not get codes from PCM until after the third trans. i am at a loss. what do you think????

ANSWER: Hey Tom:

Those codes are all transmission solenoid codes. Either you have a bad ignition switch blown fuse or wiring issue between the transission and the engine control module. It could also be a bad engine control module or even a bad groundfor the engine control module. I can't give you a exact answer with out seeing this but the issue have is an electrical failure not a trasmission mechanical failure. You could have a bad connection going into the transission at the plug. basically in a nut shell the engine control module doesn't like what it is seeing on the solenoid control circuits. some things to check are obviously the ground wires on the transmission to engine studs taht hey rae clean and not corroded or that you didn't forget to hook one up. take a look at the engine harness comming out from the air cleaner box to the transmission the engine control module is in the bottom of the box and the harness runs from there down the the trasnmission make sure the harness is not rubbed through anywhere near the radiator possably at the top or on one of the "dog bone" engine mounts near the radiator.. those are places to look. take a look at the transmission plug unplug it and see it you can visabbly see a terminal that may be spread open or corroded or even posssbaly pushed though the back of the connctor.. Good luck :)

QUESTION: i had considered replacing the shift solenoids, tcc solenoid amd pwm solenoid as well as the wiring harness. do you think i would be wasting my time with this and do you know of any way to test the circuits for these?  thanks again

Answer
send me your e-mail address I will send you a wiring diagram and give you an brief explaniation of how to check out the electrical system. I can't cut and paste the diagram to this answer. I can tell you that changing all the solenoids in not the answer to fixing this if you have had multiple transmissions in this van and they all do the same thing. it's an issue with the van it's self.
