Pontiac Repair: 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix-High gas consumption, pontiac grand prix, bg products

Question
I just purchased a used 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix-V6-6 cylinder 30 days ago.  I have noticed that it consumes a high amount of gas.  My daily commute is 55 miles round trip.  I can burn up $10(4.36 gallons of gas) a day in gas.  What could be causing me to burn gas so fast?  I'm basically getting about 12 miles a gallon city when it should be more.

Answer
Hi Tanya:

There are a lot of factors that contribute to gas milage. Driving habits are the biggest variable a heavy foot or "jack rabbit starts" are a huge contributor.City driving kills gas mailge as well. Is the climate cold now wher you live or very hot? If it's hot running the a/c will decrease the milage. If it's cold that effects the milage due to the warm up cycle uses more gas. Is this car a gt or gxp? if so it has will have different gearing in the transmission that goes with that sport package and that hurts the gas milage. Use oonly 87 octane fuel. If you use higher octane And this is NOT a GXP then your wasting your money on the higher octane and the higher the octane the lower the fuel milage. Do you have the car loaded up with a lot of things in the trunk the extra weight will effect it.. If the service engine soon lamp hasn't come on then chances are the engine is running corretcly the emission standars are set that if it's using an excessive amount of fuel it will turn on the service engine light. I can suggest that you may want to try a good quality fuel injector cleaner in the tank such as a Chevron Techron. You may want to try your local dealership for a powwr injector cleaning/induction service a shop that uses BG products or Wynns and have the injectors cleaned that "MAY" help some. other then that Ther is not much else I can tell you. If you have the original window sticker for this car look at the small numbers under the big bold numbers that state that this car can get as little as "X" milage city and or highway. No one ever looks ta the small print. You may be able to find what the fule milage sticker did read for that year car Via the net. This has the Bold #'s http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/FEG2004.pdf Not the Fine print.
