Pontiac Repair: timing belt and marks, timing belt tensioner, pulley bolt

Question
going to change timing belt on a 91 pont. grand prix with 3.4liter need to know where the timing marks are on camshafts and what position they need to be in. would prefer a diagram to look at?

Answer
Hi Ronnie:

This is a HUGE project and I would suggest you not tackle it your self. You need spedial tools as well to hold the cam's in place. If you do not have the tool DO NOT try this job! I tried to do a google search for you on this and I cam up with nothing. My online service manuals only go back to 1998 so I can't even cut a paste it into this for you. by 1998 they stopped production of that engine. This is out of alldata an aftermarket service manul we use but It will not cut and paste the picture only the procedure. This is the best I can do for you. Sorry :(

Camshaft Timing Belt/ Timing Procedure

Install or Connect

Notice: Do not bend, kink, or pry on camshaft timing belt as damage may occur.

Camshaft timing belt by routing it around sprockets and idlers.
Start at intermediate camshaft sprocket and work counterclockwise when looking at front of engine.
Make sure not to accumulate slack in belt as you work belt around sprockets.
Tensioner pulley.
Use a flat magnet, tape or cup plug to hold pivot tube in pulley.
Install the pulley and remove the flat magnet, tape, or cup plug.
Start tensioner pulley bolt. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) plus 40° using J36660, or tensioner pulley bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) .
Install tensioner bushing into side plate, if removed. Inspect
Bushing and appropriate holes to make sure they are clean, DO NOT LUBRICATE.
Loosen J38613-A to realign timing belt. Rotate rear camshaft using J38614 to set timing belt on cam sprocket. Tighten camshaft hold down tool while holding timing belt in place.
