Pontiac Repair: code 0442, fuel filler pipe, bottom seam

i have a 2002 pontiac grand am v6 3.4 my serivce engine light comes on a when i scan the computer the code i get is 0442 i have replace the gas cap check all of the hose change the purge sol valve and the light still come back on i can reset it and then when i drive for a why it will come on again can you tell what the problem is here thank you tim

Hey Tim:

well a Po4420 is very hard to fix/find. But 3 places that are connon for these to leak. If you live in the rust belt like I do then The fuel filler pipe is where I would look first the top of the necks rot out and actually split and cause a leak. The vent valves on these tend to leak from time to time and or the evap caniaster leaks the bottom seam on the canister splits. If you take this to a repair shop find one that has a "smoke" machine that is a tool that induces a smoke/compressed air micture into the evap system and with the system sealed the smoke will leak out where the "hole" in the system is.
