Pontiac Repair: Engine Trouble, intake manifold gasket, flow indicator

Question
I have a 1988 Trans Am with a 305 in it. Im having troubles with the takeoff     it doesnt seem to have enought power until it reaches about 2000 rpm    i unplugged the mass flow indicator and it did seem to run a little better but still wasnt preforming like it should     my next step is removeing the cat and seeing if its just plugged    what do you think it is?

Answer
Hi ZAc:

If it runs better with the MAF disconnected then that is where I would start. those were known to go bad on those engines. Other things to check are fuel pressure that engine I think had about 35-38 PSI running. A restricted or plugged fuel filter will cause the same kind of issue you have going on. The exhaust being plugged would be another possibility but less of one then the other ones mentioned. HAs the engine ever been apart for say an intake manifold gasket leaking? If so you may want to check the base timing on this engine it could be retarded and cause the same kind of issue.
Good luck :)
