Pontiac Repair: Key doesn´t turn to off position, grand am gt, pontiac grand am gt

Question
Hello Todd
I have a 96 Pontiac grand am gt, and the key won´t turn off anymore. The key stop´s turning on position 1. I can remove the key but the ignition stays on. I removed the lock cylinder and than the key will turn. the electrical part also works, i can turn the car of and on. The metal part which connects the cylinder and the ignition unit seems to be the problem, but I don´t know what to do in that case. I hope you can help me with that problem.

Answer
Is this car an automatic transmission or a sitck shift? My guess is automatic. if that is the case My best guess it 2 fold #1 the lock cylinder may be bad you should not be able to remove the key when the ignition is in the run position. #2 if the key will not turn back to the off position and starts in either accessory or run then the problme may me with the switch that is in the automatic transmission shifter on the fllor in the center console. That switch in the shhifter controls the key lock solenoid which Is thye part I believe your refering to not working. Good luck :)
