Pontiac Repair: speedometer in 2002 pontiac read 100 mph and sticks there, 2002 pontiac sunfire, pontiac sunfire

Question
Todd, my stepdaughter has a 2002 pontiac sunfire and the speedometer is stuck at or near 100 mph. I moved the key back and forth several times and it came back to 0 and worked fine for a short time but again as she was driving it the speedometer climbed and stuck back at or near 100 mph. Any idea what is wrong?

Answer
Hi Kevin:

This is a common issue with these cars. did the battery dy and it have to get jump started recently? If so a voltage spike took out the cluster. If not I have seen them do this on their own but usually all the gauges peg not just the speedo. long story short the insterment cluter needs to be replaced. any dealer can order you a replacement cluster for your car. You can try getting one from a junk yard but most of the time they will not sell them because on this car the milage is stored in the cluter. and it would be easy for someone to buy a used cluster with lower milage on it and install it on a high milage car and then sell the car etc...
Good luck :)
