Pontiac Repair: anti theft system, chevy malabu, lock cylinder

Question
QUESTION: Todd I have a 2001 chevy malabu 3.1L v6 was running fine and now it will start and run for 5 seconds then quits I have read that the anti theft is a major problem with this car. I would like to bypass or remove the anti theft I have read about several ways to do this but I would like an experts advise. Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Chris:

My advise id NOT to bypass it and to fix the issue correctly. to fix it correctly it either has a bad ignition lock cylinder housing or a bad body control module. 90% of the issues are the lock cylinder housing.. the other 10% is mixed between BCM failuire or wiring issues/corrosion at the BCM connctors. I have seen little black boxed that you can hook up to bypass the cylinder but those fail as well. I have seen resistors hooked up at the lock cylinder and those fail as well. So my advise is to have it lloked at and repaierd propely and My guess is it's a lock cylinder housing that is the fault here. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Hi Todd where can I find the BCM so I can clean the contacts and is there any way I can test the cylinder housing also do I have to get the keys recoded when I replace cylinder housing and how do I reset the system.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

Answer
the BCM is under the right side of the dash under the glove box. It is a black plastic module with 3 connectors in it. just unplug it and look in the connectors for any sign of corrosion. if none is present I would guess that the lock housing is bad. You do not need to recode the key the cylinder you just reuse the housing that has the sensor on it is what you will replace so the key code and keys are the same. you reset the sytsem the same way you have done in the past once the housing is replaced just crank the car over let it start and stall and let it sit for 10 minutes with the key on and the security lamp will either stop flashing or go out altogehter I'm not sure how a Chevy works with the lamp. none the less after the 10 minute learn shut off the key and wait a minute and then resatrt the car it should be good to go then. Good luck :)
