Pontiac Repair: 01 sunfire ignition fuse, amp fuse, fuse box

Question
the ignition fuse blew(50 amp under hood). we tried crossing selenoid to check starter and it didn spin until we tapped on starter.we then bypassed fuse with a piece of 18 ga. wire and car started. could a starter or selenoid issue cause ignition fuse to blow or is it more likely a short in the ignition switch or something?

Answer
Hi Marcus:

Well that 50 amp fuse feeds more then just the ignition. That fuse splits off to feed the other fuse box In order for that 50 amp fuse to blow there has/had to be a MAJOR short somewhere between that fuse and the ignition switch. After the ignition switch the other fuses are fed off that 50 amp fuse. NEVER JUMP A FUSE with a piece of wire that spells fire! take a look at the wiring under the dash and from the fuse box under the hood back into the car to see if you se any harness pinched or rubbed thru on an metal bracket around the steering column. Good luck :)
