Pontiac Repair: 1996 bonniville, brake light switch, blown fuse

Question
transmission wont come out of park

Answer
Hi Craig:

well this car is equipped with BTSI which stands for brake transmission interlock. If the BTSI system is in-op you will not be able to get it out of park. Is this a floor or column shift car? Do the brake lights work? If this has a blown fuse the interlock will be in-op. The brake switch is the input to turn on/off the BTSI if the brake light switch is out of adjustment or the contacts in the switch are bad same problem.. Lastly you could have a shifter cable binding up or the linage in the transmission it's self bad. Those are the least likely issues I think it's a BTSI issue but what part of it I can't tell you without seeing it. Good luck :)
