Pontiac Repair: engine problem, crank shaft, pontiac grand prix

Question
Todd I have a 2002 Pontiac grand prix with a 3.8 motor and 116000 miles. I live in Ohio. My problem is I have changed my 1000 miles ago Just got back from Tenn. When I start the car after it sits over night or after work it sounds like there is no oil in it. it stays like that for a while. What can i do, Or is something going bad like the oil pump  Help

Answer
Hi Jerry:

If it's making noise like that It's more than likley terminal. From time to time they will make that noise on an initial start up but go away pretty quickly. If you are usuing an aftermarket oil filter that tends to happen. The original equipment filters have a check vavle in them and stops the oil from draining back into the oil pan. Once the engine starts the oil pressure should pick up pretty quickly. If the engine is worn it will atke longer for the pressure to build back up. Meaning bearing are worn out for the crank shaft and cam shaft. You could have an oil pump issue but I doubt it. It sounds to me like this engine need to be "freshened up" a bit with new parts if you plan on keeping the car The noise is only going to get worse. Good luck :0
