Pontiac Repair: ABS light stays on, wheel bearing, wheel speed

Question
2001 Grand Prix Gt 3.8L
for a couple of days the light would intermittently come on and reset when the car was restarted. I found the brake fluid level at the sensor so i added fluid. the next time the light came on it has stayed on. I pulled all the wheels and could find nothing loose or torn wiring. The rear pads are almost gone. With the parking brake set there is probably about 1/32" clearance between the inside edge of the caliper and the outer edge of the rotor. Will this much caliper travel trip the system, or do I have some other problem besides needing new pads & possibly rotors

Answer
Hi Joe.

The ABS lamp have nothing to do with the base brakes. However on some cars if the brake fluid is low and the red brake lamp comes on it will also trip the ABS lamp on. If the ABS lamp is on by it's self and no red warning lamp there is an issue with the abs system. On this care more then likely a badd wheel speed sesnor and or harness going to one of the sensors.. if you have a digital ohm meter you can check each sensor on the wheel bearing and see what the resistance is. it should be say between 800 and 1200 ohms and not shorted to the chasis ground of the car. Good luck :)
