Pontiac Repair: 02 Bonneville heat a/c, ok plan, diagnostic set

Question
QUESTION: Tim,
My 02 Bonneville has driver/passenger climate control.  No matter if I adjust the driver or passenger temp control to either 60 degrees or 90 degrees, I get heat on the driver side, a/c on the passenger side.  If I press the 'outside' air button, same thing.  Is there a diagnostic set of steps to find out if it is a)stuck dampers, b)electronic controls bad, c) something else.  I just got the pictures from Haynes to remove the console covers, but don't want to tear into it if I don't know what is bad.  The dealer is quoting $900.  thanks much...

ANSWER: first thing would be to make sure all the actuators are responding correctly to the commands from the control head, might be difficult as they are inside the dash panel, and educated guess would be that the control head is bad.  Any chance of getting a used known good part from a junkyard to test?

QUESTION: Tim,
If I call around to junk yards, what am I replacing - the heat,a/c control head?  Is that the whole unit that I see on the console - display, rotating knobs, push buttons?  thanks for such a quick response...

ANSWER: yes the control head will be what you see on the console

QUESTION: Ok, plan B.  I got a used control head ($50) from the junkyard, took all the dashboard faceplates off, slapped in the used controller (they said they test all their electronics before they sell them).  Same exact problem. At least we are narrowing it down.  If I press defrost, outside air, 60 deg or 90 deg, I get heat on the driver side, a/c on the passenger.  Is it possible both actuators are stripped in the open position for heat on the driver, and a/c on the passenger?  If we know the control head is ok (we hope), is the actuator the only thing left?  Is there a step by step process somewhere to get to the actuators?  I hear it is a bear from more than 1 person.  thx again.

Answer
sounds like the actuator is bad, only thing left you can try is disconnect the batter for a couple hours then re connect it, possible that might recalibrate it, if that does not work then its most likely the actuator, and yes it is a bear due to being buried inside the dash panel
