Pontiac Repair: 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix Se, pontiac grand prix, fuel pump relay

Question
I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE and every once in awhile when I am driving the RPMs would be around 2000 then drops suddenly like my engine is not getting any fuel. The car acts like I am tryin to drive a manual stick shift for the first time when it does it but never stalls and the service engine light does not kick on. The fuel pump and fuel filter are new was just replaced not to long ago.

When the FRP was checked there was no fuel present.

Also the fuel pump makes a loud whinning noise which according to the auto parts store some fuel pumps do that. Is that true?

Would the MAP Sensor be causing this problem or would it be the fuel pump relay thats causing this?

Answer
Hi there:

well Yes some pumps are noisey but not excessivly! you shouldn't hear it over the radio. the older cars tend to have nosier pumps then the new cars.If you had a relay that was bad it wouldn't just cut out it would spit sputter then die out. A map sensor would make it stuble as well but shouldn't make it die out. has any dtc's been stored in the engine computer? Just because the lamp isn't on doesn't mean it hasn't tripped a code. most of the big box auto stores will scan for codes for free. See if anything is stored? I can tell you I AM NOT A FAN of aftermarket fuel parts like pumps pressure regulators etc.... Not saying that's what wrong here but you never know. these cars usually don't have issues like this. Does it have a lot of miles on it? If so I would start looking for a poaable wiring issue like a band ground on one of the engine to transmission mounting bolts/studs. Good luck :)
