Pontiac Repair: 1997 Pont. Sunfire GT 2.4 L shifting problem, clutch master cylinder, 1997 pontiac sunfire

Question
Hi Todd
My 1997 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.4L will not shift into 3rd gear most of the time and never goes into 4th gear, either while driving or parked with the engine off. It shifts fine in 1st, 2nd, and 5th gears, both running and with the engine off. It feels like something in blocking the shifter when trying to put it into 3rd or 4th gear. I recently had the clutch master cylinder replaced, but the clutch seems to work fine, shifting good in 1st, 2nd, and 5th gears. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.         Norman

Answer
Hey Norman:

Well It's not a cluthc issue. If so you would have trouble getting it into all gears especially reverse and or 1'st. My guess is it's a few things either the shifter it's self in the car is bad bevause 3/4 are in the same gate it's either up or down for 3'rd and 4'th. Or it's inside the transmission one of the shifer forks or syncro's are bad. If you had issues with this when the clutch master cylinder was bad and you "banged it to gear" a few times then the transmission may have a couple of gears that were ground up. so it's gott abe one or the other. Good luck :)
