Pontiac Repair: 96 Bonneville Hard Start When Warm, fuel pressure regulator, manifold gaskets

Question
Hi Todd,

I have 96 bonneville SE 3.8L with close to 300,000km on it. Iv purchased this vehicle with around 290,000KM on it, but before i certified it , iv done the following:
New AC Delco spark plug with cables, PCV Valve, Thermostat, upper/lower intake manifold gaskets, drive belt tensioner, airfilter. Couldn't remove fuel filter because fuel lines are TOO rusted.

Anyways, when i crank the motor over the first time usually when the motor is cold, it starts up fine with no problems at all. But after turning her off , and restarting her when the motor is warm or hot it barley starts. It studders for few seconds (as if running on 2 pistons) and then runs fine after, or in some cases takes 3 to 4 starts to get her running. I do hear the fuel pump when turning the key.

Iv brought it to a shop to get it computer scanned and they gave me this error "random misfire" , so i purchased 3 coils  and a ignition module from a car yard.. and it ran fine, until i blew the module and it didnt start at all! so i threw in my old module in with the 3 coils from the yard and this is where im stuck..
BTW i usually smell fuel after coming out of the car.
Sorry for the long novel but this is really irritating me.
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Sylwek:

Well it sounds to me like you have a fuel pressure regulator that's leaking fule into the vacuum line on the top of it or you have one or more fuel injectors that are leaking fuel into the engine when the car is turned off. What's happnening is on a warm/hot restart it's running too rich and it stalls out. the regulator is east to check with the engine running pull the vacuum line off and see in raw gas is comming out of the port. The injectors are not so easy. I'd suggest taking the fule rail off the car keep the lines connected to the rail and put some paper towels under the rail/injectors. cycle the key on and off a few times to put fuel pressure into the system and let it sit and see if they drip onto the paper towel. Good luck :)
