Pontiac Repair: 1993 grand am 4 cyl. SOHC, crank shaft position sensor, shaft position

Question
My car won't start it just cranks if you let it sit for a couple of hours you get one little pop sounding like a back fire then back to just cranking i have had the battery checked thats good. changed the plugs the coil housing looks good and i have changed the spark control module and the computer under the dash. what should i do?

Answer
Hi Bryan:

well it's one of a few things. does the car have spark when your cranking it? If not you changed everything but the crank shaft position sensor those used to go bad quite often. Does it have fuel pressure? that engine needed somewhere arounf 35-40 psi if it's far less then look there. Lastly that engine would jump time the timing chain tensioner would go bad on those and then they wouldn't start due to low compression. No so common on the SOCH version buy VERY common on the DOHC engine..

Good luck :)
