Pontiac Repair: Whining Noise from Engine, fly wheel, pontiac transport

Question
I have a 1993 Pontiac Transport - 3.8 litre engine with over 203000 miles on it. Recently, a whining noise, more evident at slow speeds and upon gentle acceleration has appeared.  The dealer has ruled out front end and suspension problems and laid the possibilities with transmission or alternator or motor, all of which are actually not causing any problems.   At higher speeds, the noise disappears.  Ever dealt with this kind of problem?

Answer
Hi steve:

well processof eliminationto find the issue. take off the serpantine belt and see if the noise is gone is so it's something driven by the belt like a water pump, alternator or p/s pump. if still ther then take out the bolts from the fly wheel that attach the engineto the torque converter for the transmission. if the noise is gone it's an issue with the tranmission like the front pump in the transmission or a input bearing for the transmission. if the noise is still ther it's in the engine it's self and it could be a bunch of things in there. Good luck :)
