Pontiac Repair: spark plug seized up, pontiac sunfire, extreme caution

Question
QUESTION: I am trying to removing my spark plugs on my 1995 pontiac sunfire L4 2.2L VIN 4 but I am having trouble. My repair manual says to remove the ignition system assembly but the transmisson pan is in the way if I reach up from the bottom I can feel the plugs but cannot see anything.

ANSWER: Hi Brian:

Are you trying to replace the wires like the heading on the question stated or the spark plugs them self's? The wires are a tough job on this car due to where they are connected to the coils on the back side of the engine. You do not have to remove the complete system. You just need small hands to reach down under the intake manifold and pull the wires off the coils. Som time you have to twist and pull them at the same time.If you have the ability to jack up the car and reach up from under the car the job is easier! Just remeber to use jack stands and use extreme caution when working under the car. As for the spark plugs most of the time the wires get stuck on the plugs and you wind up pulling the wires right out of the boots on the plugs. use a pair of pliers on the boots and twist and pull and they will eventually come off the plugs. to remove the plugs a spark plug socket with a unversal joint makes getting them out easier. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Hi, Thank you for answering my first question and I did get them replaced I went underneath. Now my second question is about removing a seized up spark plug. The spark plugs have not been changed before from the first owner so now I am trying to do it but the fourth plug is seized up will not turn at all. My socket keeps turning but not the plug. I let set over night in lubricating liquid but it still will not budge. I am not even able to get my socket all the way on it, any suggestions please help

Thank You

Answer
Try a different spark plug socket one that is longer or shorther that has a universal on it so you can get it past any braket that may be in the way. If you can't get the spark plug to budge with a new socket on it DO NOT FORCE IT. If it's seized the head is going to have to come off and have the spark plug removed by a machine shop. drive it with the 3 new plugs and the one old one. You don't want to crack the plug that will not come out either because that will start to misfire. It's a bad sistuation if they will not come out. Good luck :}
