Pontiac Repair: Pontiac Grand Prix steering, pontiac grand prix, power steering pump

Question
I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT ..  the steering is making a whining noise, we have checked the fluid level and it is full..

Please advise.

Answer
Hi pam:

wel usually any kind of whine issue is either a bad pump or the system is low on fluid. If the pump was run low on fluid It may have damaged the pump. If the system was low and you drove it the fluid gets air bubbles in the system and it take a long time for the bubbles to find their way out of the fluid. This model car  was noted for power steering pump beeing a bit nosier than most other GM cars. if the problem continues have the pump/system pressure tested. if the fluid pressures are normal and not excessivly high then I would condem the pump as being bad. if their is some sort of restriction in the system the pressures would be high and more pump noise than normal. Good luck :}
