Pontiac Repair: Grand Am starting problem, labot, aftermarket parts

Question
The dealer tells me that I need an new ignition switch...for approximately 700 dollars. I can buy a replacement switch for $110. How difficult would it be to install the replacement switch? There is lots of plastic dash in the way...

Answer
Hi Alfie:

It's a pretty big job. There is a lot od stuff in the way you need to remove the radio to gain access to the plugs on the back of the switch and also from under the dash and behind the switch ther is a detent cable that attaches the switch to the floor shifter assembly. It's kind of involved but the labot is only about a little over an hour time. So that price is out of wack. If you try top do this your self make sure you only use an original equipment part from the dealer. DO NOT USE AFTERMARKET parts for this. Good luck :}
