Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand Prix fuel gauge stuck on full, prix fuel, fuel gauge

Question
Hello!  Just today I started up my car and looked down only to notice that my fuel gauge is stuck on full.  Past full to be exact.  As I drove along, it started to go down, very slowly.  It has about 143,000 miles on it.  The  shifter is also not in working order.  I have to push the shift lock release in order to take it out of park.  I need to make sure this car runs for a while longer, as I do not have the money for a new one.  Any suggestions on what the solutions would be, or the best place to go to get these things looked at would be?  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Answer
Hi Bonita:

The fule level sensor in the gast tank has more then liley gone bad as to why the gauge is stuck on full that is a pretty common problem. As for the shifter it's one of a few things. Either the shifter it's self is bad or one of the wires going to the shifter assembly has broken off at the connector on the base of the shifter. Another possable cause would be a bad power feed to the shifter due to a bad ignition switch. But if that were the case you would have other things not working as well like the PRNDLL lamps on the dash or the blower motor, radio etc... Good luck :)
