Pontiac Repair: car is becoming gutless, port fuel injection, trans am firebird

hey i have 1988 trans am firebird with a 305 5 liter 200000k my problem is that the car loses power one minute its got lots of power the car takes off the next its gutless and my check engine light come on randomly i have no catlitc conveter eaither and if it helps it seems to heat up some times also random? why does it lose its power?

what engine is in this a TBI or port fuel injection engine? It could be a lor of things from a EGR valve that is to quick to open on acceleration to a lack of fuel pump pressure to a bad distributor or coil or even a bad set of plug wires. With out seeing this and knowing waht codes are in the computer It's hard to point you in the right direction. I would first start with finding out what the code is and go from there. Good luck :)
