Pontiac Repair: Transmission, rd gear, pontiac grand prix

1991 Pontiac grand prix se Trans seems to skip 3rd gear I can go 55 in second then shift to overdrive then its ok. If i step down to passing gear it feels like neutral and just revs up. Just started doing it today.

Bad news if the transmission shifts in 3'rd gear and there is nothing there and the engine revs up 3'rd gear is broken. The transmission will need to be taken apart to find the cause. It could just be that it's worn out being it's 17 years old or it broke a hard part like a gear set. It may just be the clutches in that gear have worn out. either way it's going to be an expensive repair. Being that the car is actaull almost 18 years old you may want to look at the cost of fixing an old car VS spending that money towards another car. It's something you need to consider. If the car is in really good shape and lower milage then consider fixing it but otherwise I'd start looking into something else newer. Good luck :)
