Pontiac Repair: Tries to start, noid light, engine computer

Question
91 Firebird with a 3100.  Injectors fire while cranking and almost starts.  Then injectors stop.  Checked with a noid light.  Will run with gum cutter sprayed into intake.  Code 43.  VATS is working.  Bad Distributor?  Does Distributor control injectors?

Answer
Hi Dave:

Yes the distritubtor in directly controls the injectors. A code 43 is I belive for spark Knock or spark retard. The distributor has a pick up coild in it and that coil sends a siganl to the ignition module and then in turn that module controls the ignition coil and sends a RPM signal to the engine computer to let it know how fast the engine is turning. That module could be bad or the pick up coil it may have enough of a signal to run spark but not the ECM output out of the module. It could be the module where it has a signal out to the coil but not the ECM. It could be a bad computer or a ground for the computer. The first thing I would do is have the distributor checked out. then I would go from there. The best thing would be if you had a scan tool to see if indeed when it will not start if tyhe computer is getting an RPM signal..
