Pontiac Repair: Grand Am passive security, car wont start, body control module

Question
The "security" warning light comes on periodically.  Shortly thereafter, the car wont start.  Based on the car manual, we turn the car to "on" for 10 minutes, then the car will start.  Suggestions on the cause and possible repair?

Answer
Hey Brian:

well it's one of 2 things. depending on what year this car is either the body control module is bad due to water leaking into it from the heater box or the ignition lock cylinder housing is bad. More than likely the problem is the lock cylinder housing. There is a sensor in the housing that goes bad. It is serviced with the ignition lock cylinder. A scan tool is needed to see for sure what code is stored in the body control module and also to see what's going on with the security data. This is a jobe for a professinal not the do it your selfer. Good luck :)
