2000 Pontiac Montanna Service engine light came on.Can you sum up what could be the reason for light to come on? And how long will I be able to drive it with the light on? No major problems with driving so far. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

There are tons of reason that light could have come on. every sensor on that engine and in the trasnmission has codes that can be set if the sensor goes bad or it sees something it doesn't like. one good things is that the light is not flashing. if the lamp is falshing get it fixed right away. if the light is just on the worst thing that's going to happen is you will get worse gas milage and theres days that's bad enough.. Stop by a car parts store like advance auto parts or autozone or orielleys they all scan your computer for codes for free at leat you will know if it's a serious fault or not.. untill you know what it for I can't even begine to tell you what to fo to fix it.
