Motorcycle Repair: 1985 yamaha virago 1000cc, problems, stator coil, fuel pumps

Question
hello, my bike starts normally when cold runs for about 10 min then sputters and cuts right out, upon restart she will barely idle, when i give her some throttle she bogs down and stalls again, have to let it sit for a while before she will run again, i checked all the fuel lines, replaced filter, plugs, fuel pumps seems to kick out fuel, plugs look okay,, any ideas ? thanks Joe S..

Answer
Hi Joseph.
One of the problems that Viragos run into is that the needle valves sometimes slip out, causing the bike to not run correctly.  You may want to check the carbs and see if the needle valves (one or both) have slipped out and need to be reset.

Another thing could be the synchronization.  If you haven't synchronized the carbs, then that could be a factor as well.
If the carbs have been synchronized in the past year, at least, then that will not be the problem.

Next check the valve tensioners.  If they are due, then adjust them and do the valve gap and timing if that is overdue.

Finally, check the battery with a hygrometer.  If even one cel is bad, then replace it.  If the battery is ok, then check the stator coil.  It could be on the way out.  If it is not producing at least 13VDC, then it is getting ready to go and will likely go on you when you least want it.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
