Pontiac Repair: 96 bonneville will not start, battery cables, purple wire

Question
I have a 96 Bonneville, the other day my son was driving it and it quit running while going down the road. When I went to see what it was doing it turned over a couple of times and quit now it will not turn over at all. I have had the starter checked it was ok also replaced the battery. If this helps the dome lights will come on once in awhile it also just clicks when you try to turn it over like the battery is dead.To me it acts like a short in the wiring somewhere any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Mike:

Sounds to me alike a loose or bad connection somewhere. That car has 2 (+) battery cables and it's pretty common for corrosion to build up between the 2 cables on the battery if one of them is loose or ther is corrosion built up between the cables it will do just what your saying this car is doing. also check the (-) cable. you can check for battery voltage at the starter when the car is cranking and see what's going on. use a Volt meter the purple wire is the "crank wire" it should have near battery voltage when cranking. The big heavy wire shouls also have battery voltage all the time. If not you have to trace the loss of power back to where your loosing some of the voltage potential.

Good luck :)
