Pontiac Repair: heater, blower motor resistor, motor shaft

Question
QUESTION: hi, i have a a 93 pontiac grand am and the heater does not seem to work at all.  When i turn the settings knob all i hear is a little bit a of air blowing and nothing else would work. Any clue on what would cause this? Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Tyler:

DO all the settings for the fan work? meaning you can hear the fan running faster as the speeds are increrased from 1-5? The issue is you have no are flow out of the vents? If you chnage the modes meaning from defroster to floor setting can you feel the air come out of the different setting? or does it just come out of one set of vents? Let me know a bit more of what it's doing that whay I can better try to help you out.

Answer
Umm you could have something that is stuck inside the fan assembly. I have seen on some of those older cars that the ait condition evaporator was leaking bad enough that the oil that was leaking out the dir from the air actually plugs the core so the air flow doesn't flow inot the car. you can see this if you take out the blower motor resistor on the outside of the heater box under the hood. if the core is plugged the air will not flow inot the car. That's my best guess without seeing. if that is the case then brake cleaning solvent can be sprayed into the hole where the resitor goes to clean the oil/dirt off the core. This is just a shot in the dark. The other possability is the fan may have broken off the blower motor shaft it's self. that the motor is turning but the fan is not or is slipping on the motors shaft. good luck :)
