Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand Prix Service Engine Soon Flahed Once, half tank, catalitic converter

Question
I've read previous posts about similar problems but I think mine is a little different.  The SES light has been on for quite some time and I know what the code is but it's more then I want to spend to fix it.  The other day I was accelerating through an intersection and my car felt like it was taking a nose dive and tripping over itself (almost like I was running out of gas; I had a half tank though). The light flashed no more then 3 times and then everything was back to normal.  My dad told me he thought it might just be some bad gas but I wanted to make sure that as long as the SES light didn't continue to flash, that I was ok. I'm going to pour a little fuel injector cleaner in the tank at the next fill up, should that help?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Danielle:

Well the rashing light means the engine is misfiring bad enough to damage the catalitic converter which is a bad thing. If the light has been on there is obvoulsy something wrong. Now what? It bcan be any number of things. I would have the engine computer scanned for codes. A lot of auot parts stores do it for free At least you know what the code is for and you can go forward from there. Will injector cleaner fix the problem? Probably not but It's not going to hurt to try it none the less. Good luck :)
