Pontiac Repair: 1996 Grand Prix wont start, fuel rail, fuel pressure

Question
We previously had a problem with the wires inside the stearing column breaking. Fixed that. Now, it will turn over, but won't hit. Is it possible that it could still be the wires? It wouldn't even turn over before. When we spray starting fluid into the intake, it will start and run for a few seconds. It kind of sounds like a fuel pump problem to me, but I'd like to be sure before taking the tank down to get to the pump.

Answer
Hi Kathy:

Yes it sound like the engine is missing fuel. You can check the fuel pressure at the engine with a gauge. that engine should have between 35-40 psi to run. the pressure tap is on the end of the fuel rail on the right side of the car. if the car doesn't have fuel pressue then check for power and ground back at the tank withe the key on and when cranking the car. the 2 wires to check back there are grey and black on the body side of the connector. it should have power for about a second when the key is turned on and then again when the car is cranked. if it has power and ground then the issue is either the pump or the wiring in the sending unit to the tank. if the car has fule pressure then you will have to look elsewhere. good luck :}
