Pontiac Repair: 2.2 gm engine swap, shaft sensors, crank shaft

Question
bad rod bearing in my 97 sunfire 2.2.  i got a 1998 2.2 engine. heads were different. used 98 block and all other 97 parts.  car starts perfect idles and revs up just fine no leaks.  put car in drive and i have major ignition timing detonation.  a friend with a garage and computer tested and says every sensor is performing fine. knock, cam, crank, egr, map, coolant, air temp, idle, etc are all fine.  gas is fresh with new fuel filter. plugs and wires good also.  tps within specs.
why so sweet in park and useless under a load?

Answer
Hey Bryan:

Good question.. there is obviously something differrent about it. The 98 had a different ignition system on it and fuel injection system as well. the 98 engine was completly different. My guess is this the timing wheel on the crank and the cam shaft sensors are different on the 98 block then the 97 and that is why you have the problem. They used 2 different methods for the ignition system to run. Just because the part bolted onto the block doesn't mean that when they are picking up "signal" is the same from year to year. That's my Idea as 2 what is differnt. To verify my theory call a dealer up and ask them for the park # of the crank shaft on a 2.2 97 engine and the part # for a crank shaft of a 2.2 on a 98 I bet you they are differnt. I'm not saying that if can buy a crank for a 97 and put it in this 98 block but if the part #'s are different then they are and that would explain what's going on here.... I could be way off base and it be something easy like a bad ground wire or or a bad connection or  something that is getting streached out when the egine is shifted into gear..
