Pontiac Repair: 2001 Grand Prix GT misfire, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
My car with 55k miles randomly misfires (at least that is what I am told)while cruising and sometimes when accelerating.  The engine light finally came on and the shop said the code was for the mass air flow sensor.  They said the MAFS was ok.  It ran ok for about a week then it started again.  Now the engine light goes on and off randomly.  I have had the spark plugs & wires replaced.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Cheryl:

A MAF sensor is sort of common on that engine. withe the car running push up and down on the connector and see if the engine stubles and the light comes on. they have bad connections in the sensor and it will cause a rough idle and a P0101 code to set. The sensor is a black plastic box onn the top of the bthrottle body assembly and it has like 3 wire in in see if that makes the light come on if it does you found part or all of the problem. The only other real common issue is plug wires which you had replaced. that engine has issues withe the coils as well the contacts on the tops of the coils rust and cause bad connections between the wires and the coil towers. pull the wires of one at a time and look at the tops of the coils. I have seen injectors being plugged cause misfires but it's not a ramdon issue when it happens it's all the time. Hope that helps you out some. Good luck :}
