Pontiac Repair: 96 sunfire, noid light, punp

Question
I have a 96 Sunfire 2.2. A friend was driving it he stopped to get gas, when he pulled out it just quit on him. The car has spark and will start if you spray starter fluid in there. I replaced the fuel fliter. That did not do the trick so, I droped the gas tank down put a punp and sending unit in her. This also did not do the trick. Please What is wrong with this car.

Answer
Hey Charles:

Does the car have fuel pressure? can you hera the pump run when the key is turned on? If not you have to check for power and ground back at the tank. The connector sticking out of the floor pan is where you have to chek it. The grey wire is the pump power and the larger gauge black wire is the ground for the pump. have a helper turn on the key while you check for power and ground across those 2 wires with a test light if it lights the issue is between that connector and the tank if not you have to look for either a bad power feed to the pump of a bad ground. Now if it does have fule pump pressure and spark and still will not run then the next thing to check is fule injector pulse you need a computer safe test lamp or a "noid light" you can get either of them at the parts store and see if you have pulse at the injectors unlug an injector in insert the light and crank it it should flash as the engine is cranking if not You have to trace the wiring again. The injectors have constant power with the key on and the engine computer controls the ground for each injector. Hope that helps. Good luck :}
