Pontiac Repair: 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix engine whine, engine whine, pontiac grand prix

Question
I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GP with a 3.8V6 engine and 38,000 miles. When accelerating, I hear a whine from the engine compartment. The noise is also there when the car is in neutral and I step on the gas. I don't notice the noise at cruising speed. Is there a problem with a belt or perhaps something else?

Answer
Hey Mitch:

It could be a lot of things the most likely cause would be the power steering pump whinine due to low of fluid. If that's the case it's either the pump resivior leaking or the power steering gear that's leaking. It could be anything that is driven by the belt but My guess would be the steering geare is the cause of a low fluid level on this car. good luck :}
