Pontiac Repair: 95 pontiac grand prix 3.1, pontiac grand prix, blown fuse

Question
My car is stuck in park. It wont shift out. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Mike:

well it's one of a few things. That car has what is called a BTSI which is a brake transmission shift interlock. if that solenoid for the shifter is not working it will not allow you to shif it out of park. turn the ket on and put you hand on the shifter either fllot or column mounted and step on the brake you shoudl be able to either feel the soelnoid release or hear it when you step on and off the brake pedal If not I would look for a blown fuse or possibly a brake switch that has come out of adjustment. My guess it is't one or the other The solenoid for that system doesn't go bad all that often. It depends on wether the car has a floor shiftewr or column shifter as to how that is serviced. It's a place to look, good luck :}
