Pontiac Repair: ac compressor replacement, compressor failure, ac compressor

Question
how much oil do you put into a completely dry ac compressor for a 92 firebird 3.1 before installing it.

Answer
Hey Wilbert:

As a rule of thumb what ever is drained out of the old compressor add top the new one. If you get nothing out of the old one or for got to check it before you turned it in for a core I would add 4 Oz of oil. If you add more it will affect the way the system cools. If you do not add enough you will have compressor failure. If you had a compressor fail already on this and not a leak problem I would advise you to change the orfice tube. If the compressor failed I would also chnage the accumulator If you don't change those parts the new compressor may fail prematurely or the cooling will not be correct due to debris from the old compressor in the lines. good luck :}
