Pontiac Repair: 2000 pontiac bonneville 3800 V-6, crank shaft position sensor, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Hello. I am having problems with my 2000 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 V-6 that while driving jerks and the engine shuts off. If I pull over and turn the key off and restart it operates normally. It has been checked for computer fault codes, but nothing shows up. It does not happen often enough to leave at the shop for the machanic to drive and they have not been able to locate the problem. What could be causing this without setting off a fault code.

Answer
Hi Jeff:
Intermittant stall conditions are hard to find. Especially that car and the model year for some reason that car would just stall and it was never the same issue on 2 cars it was always something different. the things it could be are a crank shaft position sensor Very likely. A fuel pressure regulator Also very likely That is easy  to check with the engine running pull the vacuum line off of it if ther is raw gas in it you found the problem. Ther was also a recall for that on that car you may want to call the dealer to see if yours was one that was involved in the recall or it was already done. Another thing I saw on that car was spark plug wires on the back bank of the engine routed too close to the computer wire harness for the transmission speed sensor and oxygen sensor. If the plug wires start to arch or are leaking it can spike the computer wiring and the car goes brain dead for a second thus the stall. A fuel pump starting to go bad would cause an intermittant stall as well but it would chug and spit and sputter before it would die if it was fuel pump related and it would ore than likely labor when you tried to re fire it. that Is all I have on that. Good luck :}
