Pontiac Repair: 2001 Grand Am 3.4l over revs, throttle position sensor, scan tool

Question
We have a Grand Am that when driving down the street or after putting it in park the engine just revs up steadily. It sounds like it is going to blow itself up if it's not turned off. We removed the floor mat so the pedal is not being caught by it. It sometimes takes both feet on the brake to stop the car.   Please help!!

Answer
Hi Mike:

This is going to be a tough one especially if it doesn't do it all the time. My guess it that one of the sensors for the engine control computer is acting up. Maybe the throttle position sensor?? That is a major input to the computer for fuel delivery and if that sensor is acting up it make the computer put more fuel into the engine thus the higher RPM'S. this is not anything you are goin g to be able to do you self. Someone is going to have to drive it with a scan tool and wacth what's going on. I would look at the throttle position voltage and the throttle angle % on a scan tool and I bet that at idle when it's starts to creek up in speed that those reading are increasing on there own. Just a guess. and good luck :}
