Pontiac Repair: 00 grand am SE dies then wont start back for about 20 minutes, crank sensor, pressure gauge

Question
I have a 2000 model Grand am SE , 2.4l ,automatic transmission...And its been running fine until today, It runs normal until the engine gets good and warm, then it sputters out and dies...it acts as if the fuel pump is going out but its running fine, plenty of fuel pressure...but i let is cool down for about 20 minutes and it starts right up like nothing was ever wrong...there are no dummy lights comming on as this happens either....fuel pump kicks in good sounds strong....i have not checked the firing on it while it wont start though...but when it goes back into (wont Start Mode) I will

Answer
Hi Daniel:

It sounds like a fuel pressure issue to me as well the fact that it sputters before it does would indicate a fuel concern. This engine doesn't have a fule pressure tap on it WHY I DON'T know!!!!!! if it did it would make it to easy to fix instead you have top rig up a fule pressure gauge to the lines which is a pain. I would put a gauge on it and see what's going on when it dies. The pump could be running but not have enough pressure or volume to keep the engine running. That is the first thing I would look at. The second thing would be a spark issue. These engines are not noted for ignition issues but you could have a crank sensor going bad or an ignition module going bad and the heat is affecting them.. My money is on the pump though. If it winds up being that do your self a favor and change the fuel filter as well. Good luck :)
