Pontiac Repair: 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix Braking issue, power brake booster, pontiac grand prix

Question
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that my brake pedal was sticking, and not rebounding back up, and allowing my brakes to even freeze up.  I took it in, and was told that I needed a brake job, done.  However, the pedal did the same thing.  Then, I noticed that my Master Cylinder was leaking, and had that replaced.  However, the problem still persists.  The symptoms are, that the brake pedal will feel very stiff, and when I apply pressure to them, they will stay somewhat down, and not rebound.  I am puzzled, and am wondering what could possibly be causing this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  It is driving me crazy.  I have already put over $400 in repairs to correct it, and still nothing corrective.

Answer
Hi Art:

Well My first guessw ould have been the master cylinder as well. The fact that your said the pedal seems hard would tend to make me believe that you possibly have an issue inside the power brake booster. That aids in returning the pedal back and also gives you the boost when you apply the brakes. It's possible that if the master cylinder was leaking out the rear and leaking long enough that the brake fluid could have gotten inside the booster and damaged it. That is my only real explanation I would have for you. Look into getting a used one rather than a new one. It's cheaper and for the most part they never go bad only in extreme situations. Good luck and happy holidays :)
