Pontiac Repair: Wont start hot, crank shaft position sensor, crank sensor

Question
I have a 1992 Bonneville with a 3800 and 220,000 miles. The car runs great but recently developed a problem of not starting after being run for approx. 30 minutes.  The car will be running fine but after you turn the key off it won't restart. It will start again after 20-30 minutes. When it won't start there's no spark. I've replaced the computer and ignition module but still have the problem. There's a code 17 set in the computer.

Answer
Hey Jim:

Well it's 1 of 2 things. either a component or a wiring issue. I would check all of the grounds on this engine there is a big one under the bracket the igntion module mounts to. You may have a resiatance issue when the engine warms up. The possibility is a crank shaft position sensor. It is a hall effect switch styp sensor and that may be going bad and after a hot soak it's not working. That engine should have spark even with the computer disconnected I think. Once the engine RPM's hit a certain value engine control computer controls spark timing up untill then the module runs the timing based on the rpm signal generated by the crank sensor. So I would venture to say it's one of the other wiring or a sensor. Just a guess. Good luck and happy holidays :)
