Pontiac Repair: 1994 Grand Prix overheating, car parts store, fuse block

Question
Hi. I have a 1994 Grand Prix and yesterday it started overheating really bad at a stop light. The car was full of antifreeze and had no leaks in any hoses. Upon further exploring, we noticed the fans aren't working. When my brother piggybacked the fuses for the fans they turned on so we figure it's the relay. We went out and bought a new relay and now can't find where it is on the car. Every web sight I look on points us back to the fuses that are under the hood but that doesn't match the relay the parts store gave us. Can you please help! We need to know where the relay is for the fans on a 1994 Grand Prix 6 cylinder. Thanks a bunch. Also if the fans stopped working would that make the car have no heat? Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Michelle:

The fan relays on that car are more than likely on the right side of the engine compartment and they chould be labeled on the cover as to which one is for what. There is also a small fuse block on the left side of the engine compartment up by the strut but that is for the fuel pump and cruise and a few other things. It may not be the relay that was bad if the engine computer is not turning the relay on that could be the issue as well. I wouldn't always beive the car parts store if they give you a relay that it's the correct one. The dealer is the place to go. when you find the correct replay in the fuse blox the part # is stamped on the top of the relay. That is what you want. As for no heat My guess is that it overheated so badly that it pushed out some of the coolant into the overflow bottle and when it cooled down it didn't pull it all back into the radiator and now you have an air pocket in the cooling system that is stuck in the heater core. I don't have access to service manauls at home So I can't tell you eaxactly which relay is the correct one but at least it has you in the right direction. Good luck :)
