Pontiac Repair: 01/02,p02/02 after p0440 on meter, p0440, tank pressure

Question
QUESTION: I received help from PAwl, he sent me the information on a harness problem that may be giving me this code. I also asked him if he could explain to me what the 01/02, p02/02 after the p0440 , the place said that the numbers after are make, model or dealer specific. He did not explain that, can you. the book that can with my meter says only the basic for the p0440, The cd that came with it looks like it will explain gm dtc defs but nothing. tight budget inexpensive reader.
We hope you can help, thank you,
Keith

ANSWER: Hi Keith:

You lost me on the 01/02 and the p02/02 you have some sort of genaric code reader that you got these from??? The 01 and 02 may be the number of times the code has set or the model year that the code coresponds to I have no idea. I'm only guessing here. What type of car are you working on model and year? The p0440 is a gross EVAP leak it could be a bad gas cap, stuck open vent solenoid and tank pressure solenoid or a evap solenoid. I can only guess that because you mentioned a harness issue that this is a sunfire possibly? they have a harness issue at the vent solenoid on around 2001-2003 model years..

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The Car is a 2001 sunfire 2.2, I mentioned the harness because CAJUNSC/RAMBLER390 sent me a copy of that service bulletin as his reply to  my P0440 question. Let me start from the beginning. The car is a 2001 sunfire 2.2 engine with 126,000 miles. I have a check engine light that is coming on. This happened once before and bought a Harbor freight version of the Autel tech Gs 300 code reader to see what the code was and clear it with help from harbor freight and the reader I tightened the gas cap and it's been fine for months. Two weeks ago The light came on again. It said the same as before one fault and one pending. O0440 01/01, P0440 p02/02, I tightened the cap and cleared  the code and it was fine for a few days and the light came on again. I put a new cap on cleared the code and a few days later it came on again. I tightened the cap (Five turnes this time) again yesterday cleared the code and I am waiting to see if that works.
In my question to the other expert( I tried to follow up with him through followup but he was maxed out)I only told him the car info and the codes and he sent me the bulletin. very helpful and I will check it out. You have a little more information or maybe more then you want (just a joke). I am thankful for your time and the time given by the rest of the experts. By helping me you are teaching me and I thank you.
If you have any  tips on trouble shooting this Evap problem I will try them.
Thanks again,
Keith

Answer
Hi Keith:

Evp systems are hard to fix at times even when you have the correct tools. So being that you don't even have then it makes it even more difficult Nearly impossible! The first thing I would check is that harness for the vent solenoid which in mounted to the underside of the body behind the gas tank on the right side of the car. it has a large hose hoing to it and a harness with 2 wires. The other end of the harness plugs into a connector in the body it's about 5 or 6" long with a white and pink wire in it. wiggle the wires and see if they are broken off perticularlt at the body side. If that's the case then stp at you local chevy/pontiac dealr and get/order a new harness. Other than that they is no way for you to find the problem other than just replacing parts and that gets expensive! this is the type of job for a properly equipped repair shop or dealer to fix. Good luck :)
