Pontiac Repair: Lights on dash., computer security system, gas gauge

Question
"Our lights keep randomly coming on, we have a 2004 Grand Am. We have also not been able to start the car a couple of times, having to wait the 10 minutes to try again. We were told to check the battery first, as this might be the cause. We did that and the battery had a short. A new battery was put in, and the lights came on again. Any ideas what the problem is would be greatly appreciated. Oh I called GM and they said it could be the computer security system (over $500) to repair. Thankfully we have an extended warranty. Could there be any other causes than this?" Now the speedometer and gas gauge aren't working all the time, do you think this is related to the above issue? Do you think this is computer related?

Answer
Hi Tammy:

What lights are comming on? warning lights? I'm sure the security light comes on when it will not start. that more than likely needs and ignition lock cylinder housing. It has a sensor in it for the securtity system and they go bad 9 out of 10 times it's that. You could also have an Ignition switch it's self going bad causing the gauges and dash to act goofie. Without a scan tool to check for comes I can't tell you for sure but the best bet for the no start is the lock housing.cylinder and that is a dealer only part :(  Hope that helps!
