Pontiac Repair: Grand Prix AC compressor, replacing clutch, compressor clutch

Question
I have a 1990 grand prix, just started smoking and AC stopped working.  I think that the air compressor clutch might need to be replaced.  Can you tell me how to do that?  Is there somewhere I can go to see a diagram?  Can just the clutch be replaced or does the whole thing need to be replaced?  Thanks for any advice you can give.

Answer
Hi
You can replace just the clutch, but I'll be honest, with the price of a new compressor, the warranty offered and the ease of removing and replacement, I think you'll do better replacing the whole compressor.
To replace the clutch, you'll need special tools, you'll need to get the clutch, the clutch coil and the bearing.
You'll need to remove the compressor (for ease of replacing clutch and so the tool will fit).
The only downside, if it has not been done yet, would be you'll have to retrofit your system to R134a freon and eliminate the r12.
I hope this helps.
