Pontiac Repair: knocking in motor, mechanic shop, grand am se

I have a 2000 grand am se, 2.4 litre. On a roadtrip, the car started tapping. There was plenty of oil and pressure. Continuing on the trip home, it began to knock loudly. How can I properly diagnose the problem and fix it?

To be honest, I would take the vehicle to a local mechanic shop and have them properly diagnose the knock.
It could be major engine damage, or it may be a simple fix.
That would be my advice.
