Pontiac Repair: A/C pulley is froze, grand prix gt, magnetic coil

Question
QUESTION: My A/C pulley is froze and the belt is sliding around it fine.I am worried the belt will heat up and snap while my girl is driving. Is there a way to break the pulley loose w/out spending $400.00 on a new compressor?

ANSWER: well ok without knowing the year make model etc ill wing it .. the a/c pulley weather serpentine type or v belt type should spin free as long as the power to the magnetic coil underneath it is not applied  locking the pulley with the a/c compressor,1. remove the belt, spin or try to spin the pulley by itself, if the pulley is free and only locks up tight when the a/c or defrost is turned on then you can simply unplug the two wire electrical plu to the a/c compressor, that will keep the a/c magnetis clutch from enguaging and you should be ok,, if you take the belt off and find that the pulley does not tun free with the car off, then you either have to leave that one belt off, or see if they list a belt for the car without a/c and merely route a new shorter belt bypassing the a/c pulley. if those options fail and the pulley wont turn with the belt off and the car off and no poss way to route a belt around it and bypass it well then you will be forced at the least to put a junkyard compressor on it and leave the electrical plug unplugeed and use the used copressor as merely a belt aligning pulley   i hope this helps i understand your deleima

QUESTION: Thanks for the response. The car is a 98 Grand Prix GT 3800 V6.Sorry for not including that earlier.I loosened the belt, and the pulley spun freely.I disconnected the 2 wire plug on the a/c compressor and the pulley spins freely. Thanks for the tip.Now I am wondering if I can just change the clutch,or does the whole thing need to be swapped. Thanks for the help.

Answer
if the pulley spins with the belt loose then the prob usually is the compessor is locked up    .. leave the belt loose, reconnect the wire  , turn the key to on ,, not startyhis should energize the magnet on the a/c clutch, with the clutch enguged try to turn the comressor, if it does not your compressor is shot , remove the wire and let her drive it
